Being a human i hard. Either a man or a woman.
Once upon a time, i believe in the cycle of life should be school, college, work, marriage and live happily ever after. Maybe with a bit of drama like what i have seen on television.
But life doesn't really work out that way. Plus, live in an Asian country which still have the sexist sentiment is truly hard.
As I am a single lady, I wonder why Kim Ji young is so depressed about her life. She gets really really really good and considerate husband that doesn't want to burden her with house chores like a typical man. She got a child which means she has the most precious gift in the Earth.
Looking at those two characters make me a bit jealous of her. That is actually my dream. To be a wife and devoted mom.
The problem is the society that she faced every day. Since she was a single lady, she watches her leader, Leader Kim struggles to fit in the upper management of the company. Ji Young is one of the best staff but she did not promote her because the position required a full devotion towards work which usually don't suit a woman, especially the married one.
She come from the second class family with one sister and a younger brother. Her grandmother and aunts love her younger brother more than ji young and her sister. The different treatment between a daughter and a son happen even before the birth of our Prophet Muhammad where's the daughter is usually been kill as to cover their embarrassment. Although nowadays that does not happen, but the ill-treatment still happen.
The woman in her family, her mother and her grandmother have to work hard for their family and being a devoted housewife at the same time. In a simple word, they don't rest. Even until ji young get married, her mother always worried about her because she doesn't want ji young to end up like her. before this, she encourages ji young to chase after her dreams and not pushing her to get married like the typical mother.
When she gets married to her husband, she has to be the restless daughter in law who prepared food and do house chores, which suddenly make her tired and explode. Yes, if you want someone to cook and do house chores, pay them. Or else please treat them nicely.
There is a saying from the Malay folk
'Perempuan belajar tinggi mana akan ke dapur juga'.
Which means, no matter how hard a woman study and get a good job, her place is destined at home, doing house chores.
I am not a feminist who call for equality between man and woman. Even in my religion, i learn that a woman nature is they are rich with emotion, which suits them to be the caretaker of the family. But, man also needs to learn that woman are not a robot. If you want some girl to do your house chores, you can pay for a maid. A wife is a life partner, no more no less than a man.
The problem with people nowadays are they are used to burden a woman with everything. If something goes wrong with the kid, they said it because the mother doesn't nurture their children well as they are busy with work. If something goes wrong in a company lead by woman, they would say it is because woman cant is professional as they are disturbed by family matter.
On the single lady side, i see one of her friends said that she have to work hard until she dies because of thats the only thing she capable of. Ji young sister also gives up marriage as she doesn't want to be manipulated by the lame system that worshipped man.
There are many other woman ill-treatment portray in this movie such as their privacy is being harmed in a workplace, school girl is being scolded for wearing a short skirt or be friendly when a man harasses them, the lack of choice women had regarding education & career, and the society lack of empathy towards housewife in the public place. Such examples i would say realistic but maybe too much to be faced by a single person. That is why some of the anti-feminist in Korea banned people from seeing this movie as they are not agreed with the woman issues in it.
At the end of the movie, I am glad that at least ji young father and younger brother have some empathy and care towards ji young and the women in their family. when ji young stood up with a man who badmouths her, she is so realistic by saying 'i am not depressed nor happy with that action'. No woman ever want to make a scene in front of people, especially when she in the middle of taking care of her children. But to make her heart ease, she has to say the right thing so that other housewife did not get the same ill-treatment.
Overall, i think this movie is good and really recommend for the young woman out there. It is not because we want to start a rebellion but at least we know our right in society and as a human being.
If you can see that at most conflict country, the woman become the easy target to be harass. In Uighur the government even let the government worker to sleep in one room with a woman as to build 'good relationship' between the Uighur people and the government.
Once the woman in society can function well, the is a big possibility for a nation to destroy.
Believe me.
Pray for the all sad soul around the world. Especially woman. I feel you sister.
